Living the Life
Living the Life
When Jesus began his ministry on earth, he had a plan for how to share the lessons and teachings that God - about what it meant to be in relationship with, be a follower of, and be able to hear God’s guiding in their lives.
Jesus called and attracted those who would be disciples, those who would spend time with him, be in relationship with him, observe his ministry and hear his teachings. Jesus was their living Bible Study!
As his ministry on earth was ending, he gave the charge to these who had followed, heard and known to continue to share the lessons and teachings of Jesus – as they had learned them.
Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in the way of life…instruct them in the practice and all I have taught you, and I will be with you as you do this, day after day, right up to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20
That is our charge as disciples of Christ too – day after day, right up to the end of the age.
Florene was a modern-day disciple in the town where I grew up. She lived a life full of the lessons of Jesus. She sang praises to God each Sunday in the choir, she taught Bible Study on Sunday mornings to children and Bible drills during the discipleship training hour on Sunday night. During the week she was a “cloth seller” (she had a fabric and sewing store) and was a well-respected business woman far and wide. She was hospitable, passionate and always serving the Lord.
All this while caring for her home, along with her husband and their eight children. Florene believed in prayer and study, I don’t know when she slept. You didn’t have to be in one of her classes or in Bible drills at church to know that she was one of Jesus’ disciples. She spent time with him, was in relationship with him, studied his ministry, heard his teaching and learned the lessons of his teaching for her life, you could see it by how she lived, how she loved everyone she met, and how she valued the church. She was a woman who was prepared to share with others what she had learned and was learning in her walk with Jesus.
Florene took the message of Jesus to those original disciples seriously – as a disciple.
Discipleship training at Church on the Drive readies us to live out what we learn in Bible Study. Jesus wanted those original disciples to follow him so they could see how his teachings get lived out in the rough and tumble of daily life and conflict. Going deeper, being challenged, learning from the wisdom of other disciples. It is a tool in our living out of the life we are called to lead as followers of Jesus.
