Faith – is it a gift or an acquired skill?

Posted on July 21, 2017

If you grew up like me, there were certain scriptures that we were required to memorize-John 3:16, Psalms 23 and oh one of my favorites- Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. What does that really mean and is it really necessary for my christian walk?

As I matured in my faith and age, I really began to think about this faith thing. When taking the spiritual gifts test a few months ago here at COTD, one of my gifts was the gift of faith which was no surprise to me but my big question was-how did I get there? Was I born that way or was it an acquired skill/gift. So being the type A personality that I am, I started praying and researching. Why do we as Christians need faith and if it’s true that we need it, how do we get it?

Hebrews 11:6 states And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who want to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him. So we ALL need faith if we want to please God and I’m going to say that those who, chose to be followers of Jesus want to please God. So it it must be an acquired skill. So if it’s acquired, why do some seem to have more of it than others?

So now I’m going to dig into my favorite search engine-the Word of God. How do we get that kind of faith that Abraham had that allowed him to prepare his promised son for a sacrifice? Abraham’s response, the Lord will provide. He said this with such assurance and such fortitude that he left NO ROOM FOR DOUBT! That’s it! You can leave NO ROOM FOR DOUBT! The bible says in Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, that is the hearing the Good News about Christ. NLT. Another version says Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached Word of Christ.  NET. So this search has basically said to me that the more Word you read/hear, the more faith you receive. I’ll repeat that-the more Word you read/hear, the more faith you receive. It’s up to us to receive what God has already given us.  It’s up to us to make the Word of God work for our situations.

I have found that the more time I spend in the Word of God seeing what He’s done for others, the more my own faith is strengthened. When I pray or write prayers in my prayer book, I always attach a scripture to my prayer, and when praying out loud, I read that scripture with my prayer. Because the Word of God IS TRUTH, it cannot lie therefore I BELIEVE the Word and it leaves NO ROOM FOR DOUBT!  If God did it before and it’s captured in His Word, I believe He can and WILL do it again.

I challenge you today to strengthen and increase your faith. How? Not just by getting the word on Sunday mornings, but actually taking notes (in your journal or your electronic device).  By joining a community group where you can ask questions of things you may not understand.  By digging into the Word of God during your own personal worship time at home.  As you pray for things, search the Word and find where God has done it before and stand on that scripture along with your prayer leaving NO ROOM FOR DOUBT that He WILL do it again. I will leave this with you-the more Word you read/hear, the more faith you get so…Dig in!
